  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program pays benefits to disabled adults and children who have limited income and resources

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) 

  • Social Security disability insurance program pays benefits to an adult and certain family members if the adult worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes
  • An older child also may qualify for benefits on the adult's earnings record if the child had a disability that started before age 22

Medicaid & Medicare 

  • Individuals receiving SSI benefits may qualify for Medicaid, which helps pay doctor and hospital bills
  • Individuals receiving SSDI may qualify for Medicare after receiving disability benefits for a period of time

  • SSI and SSDI are designed with unique work incentives that encourage recipients to find a job or continue working whenever possible
